This is basically Kevin’s first game, and is the early prototype for what he later came back to as RetroNeo’s first “real” (commercial) game, with the same name. He spent his first 5 months learning how to make games by thinking what features would make this exact game better. A lot of people remake Asteroids as their first game and you can see elements of that here, most notably the controls and actual asteroids, but he was very interested in programming fun, reactive enemy AI so that’s here too.

Sons of Sol is a fictional universe that Kevin had been working on for a few years, on and off. He initially intended to write novels in that sci-fi universe, but now thinks that setting would be more exciting for games. Crow’s Nest, as you see it here, is actually the first time Sons of Sol has gone out into the real world to be seen by people. Even in this prototype Kevin tried to craft some sense of history and persistence to that world.

Crow’s Nest itself refers to the hidden base of a pirate gang which are preying on local space traffic. As a private military company it will be your job to seek out that base and destroy it. The game as it appears now is basically the tutorial/training levels for your character within that setting.

The music is by Darren Lowe and it does a huge job of setting the atmosphere. He’s also working on the new version of Crow’s Nest.
